Uncertain future of the futuristic sci-fi genre

This year has not been a good year to sci-fi films set in the future and that kills me on the inside due to my love for this genre. With Bladerunner 2049 getting crazy high reviews and all the Oscar buzz, Ghost in the Shell banking on mindless fun with great visuals, Alien: Covenant trying to merge this genre with the suspense/horror genre, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets had the momentum of THE original material for this genre behind it.

All these films came out this year to mediocre box office performance:

Ghost in the Shell $110 million budget - $169.8 million box office

Valerian $209 million budget - $224.6 million box office

Alien: Covenant $97 million budget - $239.8 million box office

Bladerunner 2049 $15 million on Friday opening (still too early)

Is this the wrong time for this genre? Will it eventually find it's footing? Is this just a niche film genre?

DISCLAIMER: I personally haven't seen Valerian but really enjoyed all of the other films mentioned.
