These are my thoughts and opinions on Denis Villeneuve sequel to Ridley Scotts blade runner, i respect and welcome different opinions as well. i am not a pro at this, it is actually my second written review. ive got this thing where i do not watch trailers for films i know im going to see, this includes my favorite genres and directors/writers. directors like denis Villeneuve, PTA, Fincher and Bigelow have my ticket regardless. im an aspiring filmmaker and there are times when i go to films like gone girl or nightcrawler and i get inspired and feel secure in my choice of becoming a filmmaker, blade runner 2049 is one of these films.
Let us start off with the cinematography..... HOLY SHIT.... my eyes just had an orgasm, Deakins created that atmosphere that made the original so impressive, i was a bit worried because the few photos i saw before seeing the film looked fairly clean but its not a clean "divergent" type look, its dirty and feels lived in. now it didn't feel as claustrophobic as the original but that was made up for with the amazing culture and feel of the areas. there are films i look back to and regret not seeing in the cinema like "there will be blood" which is my favorite film, i feel pure joy by the fact that i can look back and tell my kids i saw a classic in the cinemas.
Denis Villeneuve managed to direct his actors in ways that amaze me, Ford gave his best performance is such a long time, goslings grips you from scene one and keeps you close to his chest throughout the film. Mr. Villeneuve said that he made this film because "i didn't want anyone to fuck this up" and i thank him for that and i thank the god/goddess of film for creating him, without him and the directors i listed above i am sure i would have just stayed a cinephile and not considered making films myself.
This is a slow burn, dont go into this expecting an action film because you will be dissapointed. the script is amazing, although there is this one moment where the film thinks you weren't paying attentions so they use an audio clip from earlier in the film to remind/assist you if you weren't paying attention. this was not necessary and is kinda lazy but its just a small gripe i have with the film. Ana de armas.... what else can i say? she's in the film with Gosling and i remember why im bisexual. i felt like she wasn't that well developed, she could have been a bigger part but they chose to focus on Gosling. it was kinda disappointing because they could have intertwined the characters and developed both at the same time while tackling what it meant to be human which they do but they could have made it a central piece of her character.
The films is bombing at the box office, please see the film in the intended way, i would say 2d in the cinema but as long as you're paying for it then it doesn't matter. this review i all over the place and im still learning, if you've seen it already then give me your opinion, what did you like/hate? are you excited to see the film if you haven't already? and thank you for reading this review that is riddled with unwanted pieces of information about me. 9/10. - Nabil.
