Nations Pride (the propaganda film starring Frederick Zoller in Inglorious Basterds) did any of that actually happen?

To start, I know this did not occur in real history. Let’s stay in Tarantino’s world here. While watching the movie, you come to find out that the character Frederick Zoller killed 250 soldiers over a span of 3 days. After watching this again, part of me wonders if this story was completely made up by Goebells. Zoller did not strike me as the type of person capable of such things and seemed more like a pawn/actor in the propaganda machine. The story of his heroism could easily have been completely made up. This may have seemed obvious to others, but I did not catch this possibility on first watch. I just assumed the story was true, Zoller was a hero, and Goebells made a film about it. I wonder what Tarantino had in mind.
