TL;DR: Video + Interview With 103 Year Old
I'm writing this to remind you that life is NOT too short, and that you can do incredible things if you just stop wasting your time.
“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested." - Seneca
The average human lives 71.4 years. That number's a little bit higher if you live in America, Japan, UK etc, and is ALOT lower if you live in places like Sierra Leone. But I'm going to use the number 71.4 for simplicity sake.
But not all of this time is free time. We sleep for roughly 1/3 of our time on earth so the number goes from 71.4 down to 47.6 years of waking time.
If you work a full-time job (45 years, 40 hours a week), your free time is now only 36.9 years (excluding travel).
On top of that, the average person spends 10% of there time on cooking, cleaning, eating and doing housework. 28.9 years left.
72% of Americans go from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and then followed by College. Taking average school hours into account, your free time shrinks, yet again, to 25.9 years.
In my assumption for the amount of time worked I assumed retirement at 65. However, 68% of Americans over the age of 63 suffer from some sort of disability and require long-term care, so is this time really free? I don't think so. You're down from 25.9 years to 9.9 years.
Most of these things I would call essential things - work, sleep, eating etc., so you're left with roughly 9.9 years, or 86,724 hours. What will you do with this time?
Well, if you're like the average American, starting at age 13, you will spend 4 hours a day on your phone... This equated to 9.9 years...
You now have 0 years, 0 days and 0 hours of free time.
The accuracy of these numbers is irrelevant, what matters is how did this make you feel? Happy, sad, surprised or angry?
Your emotional response to this is your body telling you something, so listen to it. Your emotional response is a reflection of your life.
When you waste your time you are wasting your life.
However, what I didn't take into account whether that work you were doing was fulfilling. Was that time you spent in education taking you towards your goal of what you actually want to do, or was it just what people around you wanted you to do? Was that time spent on cooking used to make healthy food to prolong your life? When you were eating, were you fully present to the moment and enjoying every single bite?
Life has been around for 8.3 billion years. Think how short your life is compared to that. Every single day your time is ticking down towards death.
Stop wasting time. Stop mindlessly scrolling on your phone. Stop mindlessly watching TV. Stop mindlessly whacking off to pixels on your screen. Stop mindlessly working at the job you hate.
Wake the fuck up and start enjoying the present moment for each moment will soon be lost. Start making the right decisions. Stop doing things that other people want you to do. Do what you want to do. Exercise self discipline. Exercise delayed gratification.
.
Remind yourself of this as much as possible. Each time you read/watch/hear this message you will internalize it a little bit more.
