Why do people pay for movies/TV (eg. Netflix, which restricts certain content based on region), knowing there are free, legal, HD and ad-free stream sites everywhere?

I don't understand why Netflix is such a big thing. I've used it, and a couple other paid stream sites. Because I'm in Australia, it restricts what I can watch. The only way to watch certain movies or shows that are restricted is to pay a service like Foxtel, whereby I'm actually paying for a couple of channels monthly, and the only way I can watch that movie or show is when it's streaming. So I have to watch it at like 3am.

What's the point of this? There are heaps of sites that are both legal, don't have ads, feature HQ videos, have a selection of every movie/show you could ever want to watch and are free. I don't understand why people pay for it.

Don't even get me started on DVDs. It infuriates me when I see someone buying a physical copy of a movie or show, or music. I understand the desire to have an external storage device for security to keep your files backed up, but DVDs are truly pointless and have been for the last 5 - 7 years.
