I saw Battle of the Sexes last night and really enjoyed it! A solid film about an important story with some great performances.
One thing that stood out to me was that for the first 45 minutes to an hour the movie was shot using a lot of really close closeups and zoom lenses. At first it was bothering it me but as the film went along it the cinematography started to go wider and wider. I couldn't help but imagine this was intentional to parallel the scope of Billy Jean King's story.
At the beginning of the movie, she starts her own women's tennis league and is totally isolated but as the story progresses, the matches start to get bigger and the crowds grow. By the end of the film she's playing at the Houston Astrodome in front of a giant crowd and millions on tv. That venue paired with gigantic wide shots of the stadium and classic tennis match cinematography really emphasized the scope of her journey.
Thought that was really well done!
