I watched 'Lady Bird' today in the New York Film Festival at the Lincoln Center. Some non-spoiler thoughts...

a) With the possible exception of Brooklyn, Saoirse Ronan gives what is possibly her best performance yet. Her American accent is frickin' perfect, and her acting is wholly convincing, naturalistic, and makes for an always interesting role.

b) If there is one person who was easily at least as good as Saoirse, it was Laurie Metcalf as her mom. Holy cow she was great here. While the entire supporting cast does fine, apart from the lead protagonist Metcalf particularly shines here. I'll be goddamned if she doesn't garner a 'Best Supporting Actress' Oscar nomination. The only other woman I saw this year that I could see besting her in this category is Tatiana Maslany from Stronger, who also deserves at least a nomination.

c) Greta Gerwig's writing is fantastic. Her story is a breezily paced one, with a shit-ton of hilarious one-liners and quips that had us lol-ing throughout the duration of the film. Her script is thoroughly witty and smart, but also full of great insight into the characters that inhabit her tale, which in addition to having a lot of layers rarely settles for the easy way out. Not everything goes the way one expects it to go.

This movie is definitely worth checking out next month when it comes in wide release.

TL;DR - Greta Gerwig's directing debut is a resounding success. Buoyed by the talents of the likes of Saoirse Ronan and the fantastic supporting crew (an ensemble that includes Lucas Hedges from Manchester by the Sea and Timothee Chalamet from Call Me By Your Name), 'Lady Bird' flies high.

Please direct more movies Greta, similarly along with others like Taylor Sheridan (Wind River), you are bringing a lot of gold to the world of cinema!
