For whatever reason, today, I’m super excited about The Last Jedi, so I wanted to discuss our thoughts on which direction the film may be going.

Alright Star Wars fans, for whatever reason, today, I’m psyched about The Last Jedi, so I’m going to use this space to talk about my prediction for what will happen in the new film:
Are you ready for it?
Luke will have learned to embrace the dark side. Now hear me out, for seven films we’ve been told about absolutes, you’re either light side or dark side, but no middle of the road. Vader always struggled with choosing a side. He had good, and, at times, peace, but he also had hate fueled by anger. We know that he is capable of both because he ascended through the ranks of the Jedi order before he chose to embrace the dark side as well as accepting his position of Lord in the ranks of the Sith. Vader struggles with this battle from within in every film, with the good in him prevailing to save his son in Return of the Jedi.

We know from The Force Awakens that Luke’s self-imposed exile is because he blames himself for what happened to Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. In the trailer for The Last Jedi, we hear Luke say, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” I think through Luke’s journey after Ben’s turn into Kylo, he will have explored the pull within himself and examine what his father went through to find some kind of meaning in it. A meaning for why Ben turned, why his father turned, and why being a Jedi is the “right” path.

Now, imagine this: Rey and Luke, after her intensive training, find themselves face to face with Kylo and the Knights Ren. For the first time in the film we will see the two groups do battle, as well as Luke’s first time drawing his personal lightsaber. We focus in on his saber handle and it looks hauntingly familiar.

He clicks it on and we see the glow of the saber illuminate his face. Illuminated in RED! He’s using his father’s saber, just as he had done in A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back with his father’s Jedi saber, but now that he’s learned to come to terms with both sides of the force, he is a more complete protector than he ever could be and with Rey at his side, wielding his father’s original blue lightsaber, they both balance the force within.

This reckoning of both sides of the force doesn’t mean that he’s bad, but that no one is wholly good or evil, but that we must temper ourselves to know when to do the right thing for each situation and that sometimes we make mistakes and should forgive ourselves. That life isn’t always black and white like both the Sith and Jedi have focused on and that there is a gray area we all operate in. This is the reason the Jedi, “must end.” Their absolute can be just as damaging as the Sith’s.

I’m super excited for whatever they have to throw my way, but, for whatever reason, I’m really pumped about seeing this new episode.

Thanks for reading!

This is just what’s knocking around in my head from watching the trailer, I don’t believe it’s a superior idea to anyone else’s, but I just wanted to have a tiny space for those of us that are excited about the film to talk about it.
