Resurrecting a critically acclaimed film and cult classic is can be a fools errand in most cases, but turns out, Villeneuve was just the man for the job.

A man who film career deals with slow burning theme and plot heavy elements like, Enemy and Arrival, Villeneuve sheperded a perfect cinematic and idealogical companion to the original Blade Runner.

From the first shot, 2049 asserts itself as a visual masterpiece. No scene is mailed in and no detail about this distopian California is too small. The landscapes are torn and rugged, the cities seem to be decaying right before your eyes, and whatever people that are left on the planet have turned to other realities rather than face theirs.

The story is a slow burn of detective work that can feel a tad tedious at times, but in a grand view, adds to the total emersion in the world the movie hopes to accomplish. This paves the way for a pair of great twists that by the end of the movie, leave you reflecting on what the movie means, just like the first.

An A+ cast with the likes of Robin Wright, Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Makenzie Davis, and Jared Leto all give good performances.

However, the name praised most by the hosts was Ana de Armas, who played Gosling's virtual wife/girlfriend, Joi. Sincere, complex, strong, and the character allowed to express the most emotional range in the film, Armas is easily a contender for a Best Supporting Actress Nomination for the Oscars.

Sony and Warner Brothers are going to have to watch this movie claw its way to profitability over a trio of months, but maybe that's a good thing. Blade Runner isn't a franchise that should be mined for hundreds of millions. It's visual poetry. It'd be awesome to keep it that way.
