A quote from BLADE RUNNER 2049 screenwriter Michael Green about how Marvel Studios helped influence this film, is something I wish other studios that are trying to ape the "Cinematic Universe" idea understood

"So many studios and property rights holders have seen the success of Marvel, which we all adore and wonder how to replicate it. For me, the lesson of Marvel is: you don’t begin by building a universe. You begin by telling a story worth telling. And if it is a great story directed well and performed brilliantly and stays with people, it will become the black hole around which a galaxy can form. If you begin by trying to build the universe before creating a film worth watching, well, there be dragons. At no point in the creation of this story or script did anyone talk about spin-offs or how might things continue. It was always: what’s our story and make sure you have a story that is worth the title."

The Universal Monster "Dark Universe" and the DC Cinematic Universe (formerly coined as the DCEU), are recent examples of franchises that put the cart before the horse in trying to set up spinoffs, sequels, etc. before making sure to make a good standalone film first and foremost. They wanted to have their Avengers team up without the proper set up and effort put into the projects building up to it. On top of that pitfall, the Dark Universe approached their universe in the wrong manner, trying to make iconic horror monsters into generic, high budget action adventure films, when it should have been lower budget-but still prestige-horror period pieces.

DC is starting to understand this after the overwhelming success of Wonder Woman, and with The Mummy underperforming, hopefully Universal will try the route I mentioned above.

Thoughts?
