I am a big fan of Robocop and Starship Troopers and I wish Paul Verhoeven would direct another sci-fi movie with his old team. Starship Trooper's special effects still look great today. Half Life, XCOM and Star Citizen seems like great candidates with good lore and designs in place. My personal choice would be XCOM :)
