I’m a huge fan of Sheridan’s work but Wind River did not seem like it was all that it was cracked up to be. Jeremy Renner does a great job playing Stoic Badass Protagonist with Naive City Girl, but there were so many elements of the movie that seemed shoehorned in without any room for exposition.
The mystery of “who dunnit?” is revealed and satisfied in a matter of minutes. There is very little clue hunting. Once they show up to the drill site, the security guards almost immediately reveal themselves without any doubt in anyone’s mind.
I really wish they had excluded some parts in order to make room for more of a build-up. Everything is revealed and resolved so quickly that it didn’t really allow tension to build. Like why include Renner’s son? We spend the first few minutes with him riding a horse and then he’s not seen again.
I also wish the cougars had played some sort of role in the climax. Maybe Pete should’ve ran into them and they could’ve eaten him while Renner walked away.
I think Wind River would’ve been better off as a novel if the movie length wasn’t longer. The plot felt rushed and ultimately there was a lot of ‘fluff’ that didn’t need to be there.
What do you think?
