What would you provide as the first movie a child should ever watch?

I nominate Disney's Fantasia.

It's a film that's easy to follow for young ages, but still incredibly majestic for older viewers.

I choose it because, aside from the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment, it is relatively plotless, telling its story exclusively through emotion. Children watching would always be on the same page.

Secondly, it is a slow, drawn out movie, and I think it's an adequate way to encourage patience. As much as I enjoy current animated movies like Kung Fu Panda or the Lego movies, they don't have much room for quiet.

Lastly, the movie is an art gallery of various memorable scenery and emotions. Even the last segment, Night on Bald Mountain, might be a child's first taste of ethereal fear. They might never want to watch that scene ever again, but experiencing it the once, I think, is healthy. Introducing them to uncomfortable new emotions, and helping them recognise their own boundaries.
