Watched John Wick 2, reasons it's hard to root for him

He's setup as a good guy who has friends becaus hes such a good guy eg the mechanic, the hotel clerk, and his other relationships where they like him because hes a good guy

But he didn't honor his marker. His reason that hes no longer that guy doesn't hold up since the marker was made before he quit. If he had honor, he wouldve honored the marker and Santino, the guy who saved his life. And Santino liked the dog, he didnt want to ask john but had to, so when john refuses, hes refusing who we think is a good guy (only later do we find out he isnt)

His first thought after his house was blown up was not, "it's my fault because I didn't honor my marker, but let's get revenge on the guy who had every reason to blow up my house"

He would've killed santinos sister who although a criminal boss, was someone they each considered as friends, because of Santino, who now we know as a bad guy and who will vet to sit at the high table as a result. In part one, we could root for john since he was avenging his dog but now hes killing a female friend who is a decent person

He told common who killed santinos sister betraying santinos trust.

He could've not killed the marker guy at the continental thus saving his life and repaying his life debt but he does kill him

And he killed the marker guy in the continental grounds and by doing so, violated the rule of the continental and betrayed his friendship with the hotel manager, who repeatedly stood up for him

What happens to johns friends is an important point. since we know john doesnt honor friendships, when things happen to them, we feel its his fault and that he doesnt deserve their friendship. yet he continues to survive only becausenhe uses their help repeatedly. and when common, someone who was johns friend, goes after him, he has more of a moral high ground than john. and when santino tries to kill john, they occupy the same moral high ground by this point so theres no one to root for.

So we see that not only is john not a good guy despite being setup as one, but we see he is also dishonorable by breaking the code of the continental and he also screws his friends over. john is far from the likable guy who sought revenge against those who killed his dog.
