The original Pumping Iron is half odd-ball comedy, half "mockumentary" whether Arnold and Lou meant it on purpose or not.
There are lots of scenes where Arnold is either deliberately trolling Lou and other people in the weight room, or he's being genuinely serious, which is even funnier. He spends lots of scenes wearing a funny shirt that says "Arnold is Numero Uno," chewing gum and either mocking or manipulating people. In a later scene, he even goes out of his way to mock and troll Luo at either a brunch or a luncheon.
The rest of the movie is also padded with other oddball characters. Whether they're real people or placed actors is beyond me. At competitions, there's a guy who follows all the body builders around making strange loud noises in the crowd, and getting relentlessly fired up about it.
After watching it, I realized it would actually make an incredibly hilarious remake if guys like The Rock, Dave Bautista and even John Cena were in it. The three of them are obviously perfect physical specimens for the job, but they also have comedic chops that are perfect for the roles. Bautista as Drax, Dwayne in Pain and Gain and even John Cena in roles like Trainwreck and etc are all perfect for the type of weird mockumentary, odd-ball comedy of big men being insecure or manipulative in the world of body building.
Round out a cast with guys like Will Ferrell or Danny McBride, and I think we'd have a hilarious screwball comedy, with a license to print money. Bonus points for a Arnie cameo!
