The first time I saw "Stand By Me", I was eleven years old and for the first time I felt I was seeing a film which depicted what it was like to be a boy and the bonding boys share in building their friendships especially when you're a social outcast or you're overweight or you're seen as weird or you feel like the black sheep of the family.
In every one of the characters I saw onscreen, I could identify myself with one aspect in each of the boys. I had Gordie's low self-esteem, I was as fat as Vern, I felt misunderstood like Chris and I was a geek which in turn meant I was seen as weird as Teddy.
Yet I also understood what Gordie said, your best friendships are made when you're twelve. When you're twelve, you're more outspoken, less hung up about what is expected of you, you have more freedom so there was more time to bond. As we grow up, we drift away into our adult lives and the friendships I had as a kid and a teenager dissipated into the mist of time.
Even though Stand By Me is a film about looking for a dead body, it is a film about discovering yourself. I always enjoy talking to men about Stand By Me because I always find guys who also were greatly affected by it.
