[Quick Question] Why does "Blade Runner" refer to Blade Runners exterminating rogue Replicants as "retirement"?

Title. One idea is that it's just part of some cool tagline to attach to the movie to differentiate it from the rest. Another is that Blade Runners call it "retirement" to alleviate themselves of any guilt or remorse, since killing implies living life. But, I have no idea as to what they were going for, so any suggestions or help would be appreciated!
