Okay, so you are totally allowed to not like this film 100%. You're even allowed to not like it because it didn't scare you. That's fine, I can't do anything about that. But if you're allowed to bash it because it didn't scare you, I'm allowed to think that's really damn stupid.
On the r/Horror sub and another website horror related I go to, it's constant comments like 'not scary, too many jump scares movie sucks what a disappointment'. Reddit in general loves it, and even r/horror doesn't bash it THAT much, but if you go on bloodydisgusting.com and read the comments it's non stop about how not scary it was.
I swear to god I love the horror genre but some of the most hardcore fans of it are so blind and stupid. Look, if you want to take a film like The Blair Witch Project, which is built first and foremost to scare you and provide atmosphere, if you want to bash it for not doing that, I totally understand(i love BWP btw). Some movies are out there purely to try and be terrifying, so when they fail on that front, it's totally okay to bash them for it. If the scares don't effect you, it totally makes sense that it'd bring the whole film down as a result, since it has nothing else to offer.
But IT has so, so, so much more than scares to offer. I mean damn, it's literally a textbook on how to write likable characters in a movie in which the basic basic BASIC idea of it is a slasher film. The depth of the Losers, their character development from beginning to end, how it's them conquering their innermost fears, it's basic textbook character writing. It's just GOOD. The movie is character driven, Pennywise isn't even on screen nearly as much as the 'Losers'.
And quite frankly the movies just plain fun. If you didn't laugh once in the theater quite frankly you're a monster like Pennywise (jokes). In all seriousness I think everyone who saw this movie laughed or smiled at least once, if you say you didn't, you're probably lying.
I could go on and on for a review, but that's not what this was for. Again, everything I say here is my opinion, and you're allowed to hate this film simply because it didn't scare you, but I just find that extremely close minded. This movie had so much to offer, just because something didn't scare you doesn't mean it's not good. Again, I totally have a handful of problems with the film, but this is just one thing in particular that pisses me off. To quote something similar to what's in the novel...
Why can't a good movie just be a good movie? If you are not a good scary movie, but you're a good movie in general, then who cares? If a horror movie does a great job with characters, plot, cool scenes, tone, humor...but isn't scary, then who gives a fuck if it isn't scary?
