Oh boy. I might be committing r/movie suicide by writing this, but I just thought, what the hell?
I just saw It. I loved it. It's a fresh update to the TV movie and Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise did an awesome job. It was also pretty true to the book.
However, there were some things that kinda bugged me. I'm just curious to see if anyone else agrees. Here goes:
-
I think the filmmakers were confused about what decade the movie was supposed to be set in. It's supposedly set in 1988 and 1989. But it felt more like 1958 and 1959. The clothes, the houses, the decor, did not feel like the 80s at all except for some New Kids on the Block references and a Gremlins poster I noticed. Oh and that one bitchy chick. Granted, I know that the original story was set in the fifties, and I wondered if maybe they were trying to pay homage to that, and I know that Derry is an old town, but it was just kinda...off. It should have looked more like Saved By The Bell than Stand By Me.

So they had to make Bev's father into a perverted child molester? Really? This was not in the book and it just kind of made me feel icky. I don't think it was necessary.
-
They were trying too hard to make the kids funny. Don't get me wrong, Bill was great. He was my favorite. And some of the quips and jabs at each other were funny, but I felt it got a little old. You'd think you were watching a group of little Rodney Dangerfields...most 13 year olds aren't precocious little comedians who walk around rattling off witty banter every second of the day.

No backstory about Pennywise? That's one of my favorite parts of the story!
-
I guess they only broadcast one TV show in Derry? Some children's show that even the adults watch at all times of the day? What's that all about?
So yeah that's about it. Like I said, I really loved the movie overall.
