Hello. As the title says, I'm looking for some general pointers for getting a better understanding of Ingmar Bergman's films and career.
As of right now, I've seen six Bergman films, all post, but not including, Smiles of a Summer Night (1955). I can't say that I've really enjoyed any of them except for Persona (1966), and that was only after my second viewing.
So what themes or ideas (if any) should I keep in mind while watching Bergman's films? Should I read any particular philosophical works to better understand Bergman's existentialist views? Are there any particular books or articles you would recommend on Bergman and his films?
Thanks in advance.
