I've always enjoyed seeing what movies people in the industry like, from sources such as Rotten Tomatoes' Five Favorite Films, the Criterion closet picks videos, GDT's twitter film recs or Edgar Wright's 1000 faves, plus regular interviews or talks. It's cool to see what inspires them and sometimes I discover new movies that way.
Off the top of my head, I was introduced to Come and See through Mads Mikkelsen and Nicolas Winding Refn, and first read about the Dekalog in Michael Shannon's Five Favorite Films. Both really great movies that are probably familiar to film buffs, but aren't talked about that often in the mainstream. I also recently discovered a ton of fun horror movies in John Landis' book Monsters in the Movies (a really fun read).
Are there any actors or directors (or cinematographers, composers, whatever) whose tastes you really approve of, or think have interesting or bad taste? Have you ever gotten good movie recommendations from filmmakers or actors?
