I think they are. Horror movies then were more atmospheric, they took greater risks, there was a bit more character development and they weren't copying each other's work or overdoing the Exorcist movies or jump scares.
Obviously you had the franchises of Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween or Friday the 13th but give me those movies over Insidious or Annabelle or the Frank Grillo ones. At least Freddy Krueger didn't take himself too seriously.
