Are Gay films held to a different standard than mainstream films?

There is controversy over the new Armie Hammer sundance hit Call me By your Name which is basically about the romance of a 24 yr old man and a 17 yr old boy in Italy. So far the movie has had high praises and it has been a success with critics. However, James Woods sent out a tweet saying the movie glorified nambla. Here is the rest of that drama if you are interested http://ift.tt/2y3BdBd This got me wondering are films with gay main characters held to a different standard than straight films? I mean American Beauty has a similar plot and many people believe it is a masterpiece, and won so many awards. The same with the movie Lolita which is a classic movie. So are gay films held to a different standard than straight films?
