Made the trip across the border to Toronto for TIFF this year and thought I'd share some small reviews to films I've seen so far.
Bodied: This one wrestles with the entirety of woke culture intersecting with battle rapping. It's got a ton on its mind while still being endlessly entertaining to watch. The battles go from spectacle to some seriously white-knuckle emotional roller coasters.
I Love You, Daddy: Louis C.K.'s "secret" film about a father's right to his daughter's sexual agency. It's a real intentional '50s throwback, right down to the use of score. Unfortunately it's only funny in between large spots of being increasingly boring.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer: This is an even blacker dramedy that is unique to Yorgos. There was one joke that was so unexpected the theatre took ten seconds or so to realize just how funny the punchline was. Loved this one for going all the way.
The Florida Project: Kid-level view of some seriously adult day-to-day issues of living in a low-income apartment. Really loving camerawork that showcases just how special these kids are and the profoundly sad circumstances they were born into. Great followup to TANGERINE.
mother!: Insanely frustrating in the best way possible. To say anything truly specific would probably be a spoiler, but I also loved it once it all clicked for me. It was tremendously helpful that Aronofsky was there afterwards to speak about his intentions and inspirations, though.
Unicorn Store: Brie's a really solid director who made some great visual choices and keeps the laughs coming. Slightly too twee for my own tastes, but it has its heart in the right place.
The Disaster Artist: What a pure gift this one was, because it's hard to imagine how anything will usurp this as my favourite. One of the very rare instances where my high expectations were exactly met by the final product. I knew the assembled cast would be special and it absolutely was. Surprisingly emotional and loving towards its main characters and their troubled journey together while still being shockingly hilarious.
