What are examples of movies where the protagonist is tasked to exploit or harm an innocent, only to develop sympathy for them, and eventually protect them in the end?

I know I've seen this scenario several times before, but I can't think of any examples.

Act 1: the protagonist is tasked to exploit or murder an innocent person.

Act 2: in the process, the protagonist develops a relationship with the innocent.

MidPoint: despite their goal, the protagonist begins to develop genuine feelings for the innocent.

Act 3: at the moment of truth, instead of exploiting the innocent, the protagonist protects them.

There was an obscure 70s comedy staring Walter Matthow as a con artist trying to seduce a shy Heiress played by Elaine May. But it wasn't a great film.

Can anyone think of movies with this structure?
