Happy Death Day was rated PG-13 for: Violence/Terror, Crude Sexual Content, Language, Some Drug Material and Partial Nudity.
After eager curiosity, a fellow fan questioned the director of the project and received quite a surprise regarding its rating and future on theatrical and home video release.
The original version of Happy Death Day, written by Scott Lobdell, was intended to be R-rated but was completely altered for its theatrical run by its director Christopher B. Landon. Although Chris exclaims he "loves gore", in this project however it exchanges the "pretty graphic kills" in favor of creative intent that audiences would later view upon release. It was speculated that similarly to Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise, Tree would awaken immediately as scenes are cutting away from the nastiness leaving little to zero opportunities of gory outcomes either for pacing or other innovative reasons.
The film's rating was predetermined before production with no secondary decisions for its theatrical or home video release. Therefore, no special "unrated version" featuring extended scenes with presumed explicit content would be released despite the film's darkly mischievous handling of repeated murders of the protagonist. Despite the film's rating, some lucky moviegoers reacted positively at early screenings prior to the film's October release.
