The Problem Isn't Superhero Movies Themselves

The problem is not understanding the characters.

One thing I have noticed about really bad superhero movies is that the directors do not give a flying fuck about the source material. For example, Catwoman’s director openly admitted to never reading a Batman comic. Therefore, he didn’t know anything about Catwoman. So, of course, the movie failed big time because it disappointed the fans and also just screwed over Catwoman’s legacy.

The thing with comic book movies, in general, is that people have read these stories and some of them have grown up with the characters. To not do them justice is a slap in the face to fans. And even if you’re not a diehard fan, it’s not fair to give the audience a crappy movie. If directors want superhero movies to succeed, they have to give a damn about the characters. It has to feel like there is some love.

Like the Captain America movie could have gone horribly. There is already a terrible Captain America movie but Captain America: The First Avenger was fantastic. It got me more interested in Captain America. The character was treated with love and respect instead of just being passed off as some idiot in a costume.

I’m not so much tired of superhero movies themselves. I’m just tired of directors not understanding the characters or their stories. And it’s not that hard. Like I used Catwoman as an example. She’s been around since the beginning of Batman. There is no excuse to not find source material for her. Hell, she had her own comic once. So really, I think that if directors can continue to just respect the source material, they’ll make better movies and get more butts in the seats.

Again, I could be wrong but this is how I see it.
