I've not watched many movies in my life. Is there an essentials list I can use?

For whatever reason, I've just not watched many films in my life. This fact will often shock/horrify people when I tell them. Their response is usually along the lines of "how have you not seen X movie?".

I've been trying to catch up, because I want to be able to understand what people talk about and their occasional references because movies are so integral to society.

I don't hate movies by any means. I like them quite a bit but have never been proactive about finding them. Until now.

So onto my question, is there a good source I can use to catch me up to speed on movies?
