In M. Night Shyamalan's 'Unbreakable' you can hear the audio of a UFC fight between Ken Shamrock and Brian Johnson, a fight Shamrock won by forearm choke. A few minutes later David Dunn kills the murderer by? You guessed it. A forearm choke.

I had to pause the movie last night when I heard the name "Big John McCarthy" coming from a TV off-screen.

Unbreakable came out in 2000, which made me think it was odd to hear the audio from a UFC fight in the background. If it was just "sports noise" Shyamalan wanted, why would he choose the audio from a niche sport?

So I decided to figure out what fight was playing in the background, and if you turn your volume up you can hear the names "Shamrock" and "Johnson." Quick check on Sherdog and I had my answer. Ken Shamrock beat Brian Johnson in Round 1 by submission (Forearm Choke) in UFC - Ultimate Ultimate 1996 with John McCarthy reffing.

A few minutes later in the film and David Dunn defeats the orange man with a similar move.

If you go and watch the actual fight footage Shamrock chokes out Johnson on the ground, so it's not a direct parallel, but it's an interesting one nonetheless.

Nice touch, Shyamalan.
