I've seen the movie a two dozen times. I love it. Even after realizing this, I still love it. But it irks me and there's no mention of it in countless google searches. I apologize in advance for the length.
-He is one of the fastest people on the planet
-He gets voted on to the All-American college football team. Meets the president. Has the most memorable interaction with the president of all the players.

-Becomes a legendary war hero. Wins the Medal of Honor. Again, has an unforgettable interaction with a different president.
-Seemingly hours after receiving the Medal of Honor. Is a key speaker in a massive Abbie Hoffman war protest.
-Joins the US national ping pong team. Becomes "the first American to visit China in decades." Is on the Merv griffin show with John Lennon.
-Meets another president. brings down watergate. Someone would eventually tie his phone call to the capture of the intruders.
-gets professional sponsorship and is part of a world wide advertising/marketing campaign
-is the sole survivor of a horrific hurricane and becomes an overnight millionaire. Picture and lead article in fortune.
Then I noticed when he "starts running" they do the news coverage of "Forrest Gump. A gardener from greenbo Alabama." The reporter even says it as if, "some idiot from bum fuck." As opposed to how he should have said it. "Well, he's famous again. The most famous, hero, athlete, business man in the world. A man I place, a hair below Jesus Christ. Is running around the country."
Then I started thinking about the people different people on the park bench. None of them recognized him. One even laughs at his claims. Then you start going back and wondering... How many of the people prior to the park bench "should" have recognized him or show meeting him to be an honor?
