If I were to sit down with someone who has never seen either of these films, what would be the better order to show them in?
Part of me feels that it would be better to show A New Hope first because it is an older film and more low key. It has some solid characters and sets up things nicely; it was the first film to be released after all!
Reasons for watching Rogue One first: I think that in A New Hope the impact of the Death Star is missed. Sure it is a super weapon capable of planetary destruction, but I still feel the energy surrounding the rebels and the Death Star is low. In Rogue One, a strong sense of urgency is given toward the Death Star and the imminent threat it poses to the galaxy. It enhances A New Hope by showing how desperate and immediate their situation is.
My personal recommendation is to watch A New Hope first. I believe that new audience members will only see the action in Rogue One and miss the impact of the story. It is after a fan service film, and most of the story throw backs will be glossed over. As well, it may be jarring going from seeing Vader kicking ass to barely moving in the duel.
What do you think?
