I got my MoviePass in the mail yesterday despite having ordered it on August 16th. While it did take over a month to receive, I must say I am sympathetic to MoviePass's situation of a ridiculous influx of new customers. Essentially the Ole Reddit Hug IRL. I looked past it because of the ridiculous deal that it will be if the service pans out.
I drove to my local movie theatre to finally see Dunkirk (just catching it before it leaves theatres). I checked in to the movie 40 minutes prior to showtime and it prompted me for the last 4 digits of my MoviePass to activate the card. After about 3 seconds of loading over LTE it activated my card and it checked me into the movie and pleasantly prompted me with a message of, "Enjoy! Now go buy your ticket with your MoviePass card!" I did just that. No fuss, no muss.
I walked up to the box office, "1 for Dunkirk, please." Cashier swiped my MoviePass as if it were a debit card. "Here's your ticket sir."
That was it?? This is great! So simple!
I even asked the guy at the box office, "Have you gotten many MoviePasses here yet?" He said, "Surprisingly no, but hopefully more people catch on."
People have been bashing the business model as "no way it can make money", but I have to think movie theatres don't mind it for the time being. They get their admission costs from MoviePass while driving more people to the theatres and increasing concessions sales-- where the REAL money maker lives.
Being perfectly Frank here, if I didn't promise my wife to start eating healthier with her, I must say I would not kind at all visiting the concessions stands for some movie snackies.
So here I am sitting in the theatre waiting for Dunkirk to start and typing out this post, encouraging people anxiously awaiting their MoviePasses to sit tight. After my first experience, it is one man's opinion that it is worth the wait!
