I just saw the movie without knowing anything about it (I dont like watching previews or learning too much about a movie prior). I came up with the idea below while watching it. I do agree that the religious interpretation is definitely deeper than mine, but I thought this interpretation was interesting enough to share/discuss.
The poet/Him is a real poet/storyteller/writer/etc. who's mind is the house. The people are ideas. He focuses on his muse (his main idea for an idea/story/poem) to write his next work, but isn't working out too well for him in his head (house). He brings other ideas in (other people like man, woman, and kids), but finds out they aren't good enough or spark interest (kicks them out of his head). But this mix of ideas is what created a new one (making a baby after people leave) that sparks a new idea (baby that was made). This idea brings great success in the real world with his career. The artist lives off this success for some time. All is great with success until you need to create your next work.
Now, your last idea really doesn't need exist anymore as it has completed and printed. The last idea (the muse, or mother) reads the work, loves it (as it is her completed) and asks "are you going to leave me?" because now the idea is completed and produced. Like many artists/writers/musicians/etc. out there who get popular from one work are expected to make something 'similar' to their fame/theme/style.
So now the poet/Him brings in many different ideas on what the next project is (all the different types of people coming flooding the house and causing all the destruction of the house) and it is now time to find his next idea/story/poem. He is expected to keep his style, so he uses his last great work to influence the other ideas (feeds the baby from the last project to the rest). The mother ends up dying as that project/idea is over. He takes the original theme from her (crystal) only to create the next 'work in progress' muse idea that starts the creative process all over again.
tl;dr: Overall in my mind during the movie it made sense to see it as the creative process for an artist. Whether it be music, poetry, art, writing, etc., you create an idea based on theme, build it over time and mix with some other ideas, finish the work, start a new creative process of new ideas for another work of art that is based your style, and then repeating the process.
