positivechange

I’ve spent a long time researching motivation, habit formation, and discipline. I started to do this when I got frustrated by my inability to stick with a new habit longer than a week or two.

Until I figured out what worked for me I was frustrated; I thought my inability to build new habits was because I was fundamentally lazy or broken, and was unable to change. It has been a weight off my shoulders to realize that isn’t true.

Interestingly, it turned out that two things were important in keeping me productive and top of my new habits. The first was external motivation. The second was having supportive friends and accountability.

Not everything we work towards in life is inherently fun. External motivation helped me power through moments where I just couldn’t bring myself to care things I knew were important to me, and my social network helped remind me that other people struggle with self-improvement as well. Knowing that other people were on the same journey emboldened me, and kept me focused on my goals.

I decided to make a task/habit tracker mixed with a game to harness external motivation and social support for just this kind of thing. The idea here is to make something to help organize your life; to provide extrinsic motivation and a social network for those moments when intrinsic motivation is not enough.

I’m starting a private beta, and would love to get feedback from people who spend a lot of time working on self-improvement. You can sign up for the private beta here.

P.S. If anyone is interested in some of the resources I found on habit formation please ask, I’d love to share.
