Some movies that came out recently that people had very high expectations for...didn't exactly get the most unanimous praise (i.e. Suburbicon, Battle of the Sexes, mother!, etc.)
This narrows down the race a bit, and so far these films, judging mostly by the high critical praise and success, are the ones that I bet will be nominated, couple of them being basically guaranteed (assuming the Oscars stay as honest as possible and also remember the importance of artistic merit even if the film isn't a big mainstream blockbuster):
Dunkirk (duh)
Call Me By Your Name
The Florida Project
The Shape of Water (may not have been released in the US yet but in addition to winning the Golden Lion, which is no small feat, reviews are already very strong, 96% RT score last I checked)
Lady Bird (?)
Molly's Game
Darkest Hour (?)
A couple that haven't come out yet but is unlikely to suck cuz of the caliber of talent involved and is unlikely not to get nominated:
Phantom Thread (PTA and Daniel Day-Lewis - I'd be surprised if this sucked)
The Post (Spielberg? Meryl Streep? Tom Hanks? What could go wrong)
I'm probably missing one or two but these are my opinions from what it looks like right now.
If the Oscars decides to give a blockbuster or two some surprise recognition, 'War for the Planet of the Apes' and 'Get Out' may pull off a 'Mad Max: Fury Road', who knows?
If the academy does nominate a superhero film, it should be Logan in my opinion, not Wonder Woman, with all due respect.
Maybe 'The Last Jedi' will also blow everyone away...including the academy...
