male gaze in film

just went through some old articles and such on male gaze in film and how this notion was used to put down melodrama-specific films from the 50s. made me wonder how much of our notions about greatness are still infused with hardened thinking of old, conscious or subconscious. anywho, the article i had read was on how it manifests itself into having men project themselves onto the men in film, and view women as the objects in that way as well. the big one that stands out to me is Return of the Jedi with leia, which I can expound upon later.

what do you think of the male gaze? how ingrained is it in our production still today? how many of our notions for what makes something good can be linked back to it somehow?
