Lets Discuss Why Video Game Adaptations Suck.

Hey there,

This has been bouncing around in my head for the past few months and now that the Tomb Raider reboot is kicking off with a new (bad) poster and a new (sorta bad) trailer I wanted to bring up the discussion again.

Sellout mode enabled: I actually made an entire 27 minute video talking about why video game adaptations blow, about why comics and novels seem to work better as adaptations, a quick retrospective on some bad video game movies and why we're still waiting on that breakthrough film that shows the world video game stories can be adapted into great films if approached in the correct manner:

The thesis essentially boils down to three things film makers need to consider before adapting a video game:

  1. The game needs to have a deep interesting lore. The reason for the need for deep lore is because the main video game stories tend to be inherently tied to their interactivity.

  2. Because video games are an inherently interactive medium, wherein the player has part of the authorship of the experience, they cannot be 1 to 1 adapted to a non-interactive medium such as film. This is also why its easier to adapt a comic or novel to film as all are non-interactive mediums.

  3. Stop making so many references to fans and winks to fans, some are ok, but the film should be its own story accessible to everyone in theory.

And finally find the central theme, the heart of the game, what makes us love it and bring that into the themes of the film.

If you guys have any other suggestions or just want to discuss bad video game adaptations feel free to discuss below.
