Its not that bleak. 2017 has been a great year for mid range and smaller films.

A lot has been said of the declining Box Office of big films this year, like it is said every year. And it is true that there were some massive flops (King Arthur, Valerien, GitS, Monster Trucks, The Dark Tower) and some big disappointments (Transformers 5, War for the Planet of Apes, Mummy, Baywatch, Cars 3, Alien Covenant). The failure rate among blockbusters was quite high, and that has made a lot of noise. But let us not let this grim news overshadow the big successes of many lesser budgeted(<=80 million) films. These films have made at least 3 times their budget, a number of them are original, and have been quite well received generally. Some of the notable ones among others are:

Scheme: Movie (Budget, Worldwide gross) * = and counting

1) It (35m, 376m*)

2) Fifty Shades Darker (55m, 378m)

3) Lego Batman (80m, 311m)

4) Annabelle Creation (15m, 290m*)

5) Split (9m, 276m)

6) Get Out (4.5m, 252m)

7) Baby Driver (34m, 220m)

8) A Dogs Purpose (22m, 194m)

9) John Wick 2 (40m, 171m)

10) Hitmans Bodyguard (30m, 142m*)

11) Girls Trip (19m, 132m*)

12) The Shack (20m, 96m)

13) Atomic Blonde (30m, 95m*)

14) Going in Style (25m, 85m)

15) The Big Sick (5m, 51m)

Dear Mods, this is not meant to report the Box Office of the films. Rather just a tip of the hat to the success of these films.
