First things first: I liked the actors. The actors did a wonderful job of portraying their characters but that's about it. Everything else about this movie annoyed me or just seemed off.
The dialogue, which the movie tries really hard to convey as witty and earthen, just came off to me as a writer trying and failing. I didn't find any piece of dialogue funny. The movie wanted so badly for me to laugh at some of the lines (f.x. That's for John Lennon, Yankee fucking cunt!) but they just fell too short in my opinion. The theme of right and wrong also come strongly into play but it's just all so shallow. ("You've got to stick to your principles." Thanks for explaining that to me movie.)
The main characters are people you despise throughout the entire thing. Terrible people (murderers) and I never felt anything for them because of that. And even though Ray was supposed to have some redeeming quality to him, since he felt guilt over killing a child, who wouldn't? He killed another person and didn't give two shits about that. Ray is also extremely childish and is used in the movie over and over again as comic relief, yet he is also this hitman charmer bad boy and oh my god if I haven't seen this character in a million movies before. Same goes for Ralph Fiennes character (don't rembember the name), rich evil cartoon villain guy, which the movie admits (You're a cunt now, and you've always been a cunt. And the only thing that's going to change is that you're going to be an even bigger cunt). And the older, wiser, more sophisticated british guy who counteracts Ray. I get it, it's not clever. I think the only reason people like Ray is because of the actor. Colin Farrell has the type of face that really sells you on an idea of a character. This felt to me like a poor man's Robert Downey Jr. from "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (which is a movie I do like, though the two movies aren't really comparable).
The action was bland. How anti-climactic the chase scene from the hotel (the scene inside the hotel with the innkeeper was really the only thing this movie had going for it until the movie had to openly exclaim "THESE GUYS ARE MAD!")was made me cringe. They plot it out, he jumps on the boat, gets shot, the guy steering the boat is apparently a robot and doesn't even flinch that this person is bleeding out on his boat, and then the movie goes all open-ended on you with a dash of irony (kills a midget, thinks its a kid, 10/10 movie ending) which was supposed to make me feel like "this is no ordinary movie" or I don't know what it was supposed to do. The ending was crap. "Does he survive?" Who cares, he's a murderer/terrible person.
The movies biggest offence is it's most unimaginative way of making it seem "deep". With religious undertones and allegories of course! (Ooh, I get it... Bruges IS purgatory, sneaky.........)
The movie tries to center itself around morality and right and wrong. But all the main characters are bastards so it doesn't work. The biggest question this movie has on right and wrong is "should a person commit suicide if that person kills a child?" That's just insanely stupid on so many levels.
I couldn't find a bad review online for this movie, so I want to ask you guys. What am I missing here? Should I watch it again? I wanted to like this movie and stuck out with it but to me it felt pseudo-intellectual and just plain boring. I get that things connect and noticed a lot of foreshadowing, (Bottle can kill you, woman swings a bottle. On top of the tower shooting at Ray. Talking about death concerning the midget, then the midget says: "in another life". American has heart attack etc. etc.) but it all seemed just so blatantly out there and the movie still had the balls to present itself as clever. No subtlety to it which makes the movie lose all of its finesse.
It's just a collection of events happening to mostly bad people you don't care about that coincidentally come together to make up a very crude and boring movie.
I just don't get this movie. People have their likes and dislikes of course but I want to know, what did this movie do to make you like it? Also, if you've seen other similar movies, please recommend them to me!
