This post is not intended as circle jerk post nor is it meant to share my opinion of Chris Nolan. Rather it is to gather important numbers about his filmography. This includes critics and audience scores of (Rotten Tomatoes + IMDB) and Box Office performance of all his 10 films. Reason for this post is that once gathered, this measure of quality + financial performance on such a CONSISTENT level is unmatched over the last 20 years, and so deserves a mention. The films are listed in order of release.
Scheme (year of release, RT critics score, RT average rating, RT audience score, Imdb score, Budget, worldwide box office)
1) Following (1999, 78%, 7.1, 85%, 7.6, $6000, $48000)
2) Memento (2001, 92%, 8.2, 94%, 8.5, 9m, 39m)
3) Insomnia (2002, 92%, 7.7, 76%, 7.2, 46m, 113m)
4) Batman Begins (2005, 84%, 7.7, 94%, 8.3, 150m, 374m)
5) The Prestige (2006, 76%, 7.1, 92%, 8.5, 40m, 109m)
6) The Dark Knight (2008, 94%, 8.6, 94%, 9, 185m, 1.00b)
7) Inception (2010, 86%, 8.1, 91%, 8.8, 160m, 825m)
8) The Dark Knight Rises (2012, 87%, 8/10, 90%, 8.4, 250m, 1.08b)
9) Interstellar (2014, 71%, 7, 85%, 8.6, 165m, 675m)
10) Dunkirk (2017, 93%, 8.7, 82%, 8.4, 100m, 511m)
Analaysis:
What is remarkable is that all 10 films have been on the whole very well received by critics AND audiences. His lowest film on RT (Interstellar) has a 71% (quite decent) score. The lowest average critical rating is also of Interstellar which is 7/10(still quite respectable). Lowest Imdb score 7.2 (Insomnia).
Financially speaking, all his films have made at least 2.5 times their budget. 3/10 films made 2.5x while the rest 7 have made at least 4x. So all range between break even to blockbuster level. There is not a single flop on there.
What makes this stellar record even more amazing is that 4 are outright original films (Following, Memento, Inception, Interstellar), and 3 are non franchise films (Insomnia, The Prestige, Dunkirk). The Batman films were his only franchise films, and again credit to Nolan for bringing Batman back into the game in cinema after 2 very disappointing films.
In conclusion, this post is based on factual data, and it shows that Nolan's track record in excellence is unparalleled. Whether you like his films or not (even I dislike 3 of the films, and only 2 would figure in my list of favorite ones), this is an incredible achievement of his.
