'Alien' Movies that explore 'Encounters of the Third Kind' intelligently and not just 'Alien Invasion', doomsday, save the world garbage.

In my opinion there is a distinct lack of movies featuring extra-terrestrials that arent all doom and gloom, hollywood blockbusters.

Both these movies depict aliens as beautiful creatures that arent all bent on world domination and harvesting humans for food.

But I guess, anything like the tv series 'V', which in the end really was an alien invasion but still did a decent job of exploring complex themes intelligently and I enjoyed.

Anyone got any suggestions?
