People that shouldn't be allow to criticise films

First of all I am very angry, and this is more of a rant, so don't expect anything exactly coherent.

I was watching arrival with two other friends today. They were constantly on their phones throughout the film, especially the most important parts. For example, when Louise is told about her power through subtitles, they didn't even notice the writing because they were glued to their bright screens.

Come near the end of the film, I ask them if they understood it and they shake their heads. I explain it to them with full enthusiasm, even saying shit like "how fucking cool and smart is that", and they just shrugged.

As the credits rolled, they called it extremely boring and that nothing made sense. One of them just downright calling it a shite movie. I kept my cool but this really pissed me off. I know Arrival has it's criticisms, and one of them is that it's a little slow, but you can only have the criticism when you've actually watched it. The cinematography is one thing that never bored me in that film. People that do this should not even be allowed to have an opinion on a film they technically haven't laid eyes upon. It's a movie (moving images), not an audiobook.

They call themselves movie buffs but say they loved minions, Triple X: Xander Cage, Fast and furious and transformers (nothing against these films, but let's be honest, they are not thought provoking or unique in any way.). They also hated fight club, The usual suspects and other classics, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt because I know those films aren't perfect. Now I don't even think they watched them properly, probably playing apps and liking booty pics on Instagram. These are people I consider my friends. Right now I really don't want to be associated with them because of the love and respect I have for cinema.

tldr; please watch a fucking movie with both eyes, before you criticise it. I know it sounds stupid but more and more people are doing shit like this. Next time this happens, I will leave the room and go home.
