Just watched this again for the first time since I was a teenager. I was kind of taken out of the atmosphere of the film by Nicholson's clownish antics.
I think the film probably would be more effective if it had a central character with a more mystique. Perhaps Michael Shannon. He can play a real psycho, but he has a sincere core that usually shines through in a way Jack just can't quite manage.
I was thinking of realistic casting choices for the late 1978 when the film was in production. Dennis Hopper seems like he could have knocked this one out of the park.
