She's the Susan Lucci of the Academy Awards. Every year she comes up with a potential, juicy role that might get her that Gold statue that has been eluding her and she misses out when someone else, usually a young starlet, shows up and steals the limelight.
She nearly won the Oscar for American Beauty but Hilary Swank showed up with Boys Don't Cry and the rest is history. Then came Being Julia, the film wasn't up to much but her performance was phenomenal. She was beautiful. theatrical, played a hysterical actress threatened by old age and a philandering husband and just when it seemed she might finally win, Hilary Swank shows up again with Million Dollar Baby and the rest is history. ´ Then comes The Kids Are All Right. Bening has all the hype, not a showy performance and more supporting than lead (Julianne Moore is the lead) but this is the time, this is going to be the Academy's chance to give Bening the Oscar she so deserves but then Natalie Portman in a tutu and playing crazy in Black Swan happened and the rest is history.
There have been other movies she was in that could have landed her a nomination but didn't: Running with Scissors, 20th Century Women, Bugsy, Mother and Child.
Film Stars Die in Liverpool seems as Oscar baity as it gets. Aging star falls for a young man and then realizes she's dying. It's like Camille meets Harold and Maude. Bening playing Gloria Grahame is almost too much of a coincidence since her performance in The Grifters which landed her first nomination was visibly inspired by Grahame. Reviews on her have been very good but Bening always seems to get that big role in a year stuffed with marvelous performances from women. Sally Hawkins appears to be the one to beat (Maudie and The Shape of Water).
