Why is Mulholland Drive considered such a masterpiece?

I recently watched Mulholland Drive for the first time after reading about how it is considered one of the best, if not the best, movie of modern times. I knew not to expect a straightforward crowd-pleaser or anything like that, and I’d seen a season of Twin Peaks so I had some familiarity with Lynch, but I came away not understanding at all why it’s considered such a masterpiece. I know the plot is universally considered impossible to completely figure out, and that’s not a deal-breaker for me, but I’m still trying to figure out what makes it so great. There were entire scenes or set pieces that had nothing to do with the rest of the movie and did nothing to forward or explain any of the different plot strands in the film (I read that this could have been because the film was originally supposed to be a TV series so they were planning on having longer to wrap things up).

Overall I’d just love to understand better why it’s considered such a masterpiece, as I feel like I’m missing out.
