What's the appeal of Eraserhead and why is it considered a classic?

I'm currently diving into Lynch's work after hearing so much praise for Twin Peaks and Mulhollan Dr. I've watched the latter and overall, I liked it. A recent post led me to watching another Lynch film, Eraserhead. Well, I watched it and I just don't get the appeal. The popular messages seem very simple and not conveyed in a thought provoking manner. It's a very strange film that's slow and enigmatic. I don't get the sense it's a horror either. The experimental nature of the film is something I can admire though. Everything now is mostly conventional. Besides that, I have to admit I didn't enjoy it and I'm confused as to why it's considered a classic. I really don't think repeat viewings of this movie will give me newfound appreciation.
