What are some movies that elevate a traditional plot/premise with a unique setting/time period?

I'm looking for more films in the vein of Under The Shadow and Marshland, partially foreign movies and ideally historical.

The former takes a somewhat traditional ghost/haunting horror movie and places it in 1980s wartorn Tehran. While the latter is a bleak murder mystery thriller set in the marshy outskirts of Andalusia, shortly after the fascist regime collapsed and Spain became a democracy. Both movies have unique sense of place and tension due to their historical context injected into the more traditional horror and thriller premises
