The difference between storytelling directors and aesthetic directors ?

Some directors are good at both. I've noticed more and more that some directors who are good at storytelling have bland visuals, look , etc. on the other hand some directors who have amazing visuals are not so good at telling the story telling. Then there are directors like Bay who is just good at blowing shit up. Anyway, is there a specific reason some directors either lean towards either looking cool or telling a good story?
