Remakes of Books and Series.

There's a lot of movie these days where they remake a book or a tv series into a movie.

Often the movie is ok on it's own, but because they took a whole series and compressed it down they have to drop a lot of material and then the movie can't have all same themes as the source material.

It almost seems like if they just made the movie but called it something else instead of what the source was titled then they would be fine movies... but not always.

I enjoyed the Deathnote movie, not having seen the anime... I watched the Anime after and it was way different and better. Most of that is just due to length and time constraints. I enjoyed the tone of the movie, but it did change a whole lot from the series. If it was called something other than Deathnote, but still gave the original author/creator credit then it would have been a fine movie... but people are pissed because it missed so much.

Similarly the Dark Tower movie pissed me off. I'm a huge fan of the book series and this movie did not do it justice. I'm pretty unclear if The Dark Tower movie was supposed to just reflect the first book or the whole series.... if it was just the first book... then maybe it's ok, if it was supposed to be the whole series then way too much is lost. Anyway, the movie would have been alright on it's own if it wasn't like... trying to be the Dark Tower and failing.

Is there any good way to bridge this gap? Maybe its just an awful idea to try and squeeze a seven book series or a 20+ episode anime into a 90 minute movie.
