I currently predict that Christopher Nolan may win the 'Best Director' Oscar next year

Among the likely rivals in this category would probably be Joe Wright (Darkest Hour), Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), and Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread).

I think he will definitely garner a nomination at last due to his (obviously) brilliant work on 'Dunkirk', also likely to be a Best Picture Nominee. Already a big step up.

Even if Kathryn Bigelow is nominated, it's highly unlikely she'll win - Detroit was good but general consensus is that it wasn't flat-out amazing or compelling like The Hurt Locker (2009), and she had already won before so it doesn't seem likely that any politics will help her out this time. If the Academy nominates any female director at all it may not be Bigelow (of course I could be wrong).

Right now I only see two or three serious contenders to rival his chances, but from the looks of it this could be Nolan's big break.
